Desideratum

I do not ask you for a crutch -
just a helping hand.
I do not ask you for life -
just now and then.
I do not ask you as a cripple -
just as one who needs.

I do not ask you for hilarity -
just a simple smile.
I do not ask you for praise -
just a little encouragement.
I do not ask you as an inferior,
just as one who needs.

I do not ask you to be brave,
just to be there.
I do not ask you for wisdom -
just a wise word or two.
I do not ask you from my speech - just as one who needs.

And just as one who needs,
I ask you this and more.
But remember please the one who needs -
You may need much more.

And I will give the one who needs,
The smile, the hand and praise.
For as one who needs,
I understand how the land of life lays.
